Chapter Twelve

Caldin

The unreasonably bright morning sun woke him, and he managed to get off a heal spell with his eyes closed. It was the second day in a row he’d have had a hangover if it wasn’t for his life affinity. They’d gone out yesterday for lunch and started to drink, and they hadn’t gotten back to the palace until after midnight. He remembered most of it, a few parts were fuzzy, but he didn’t think he did anything too stupid.

He was sure the rest of the questions hadn’t put Silvia in a bad light at least. No, all that damage had been done the day before. He got in the bath and cleaned up for the day, and he tried to clear his head as he ate breakfast and took care of his cultivation. He just knew he didn’t want to see another mug of ale for a while.

The late morning knock on the door wasn’t much of a surprise this time, and he moved over and opened it with a respectful nod in Nicola’s direction.

Nicola said, “Good morning. I have your retirement paper here. You just need to sign it, had the guild scribe fill it out.”

You might get there faster if you stick around until one of us magi need to head out near Graymark. We make it a habit of taking anyone needing to go with us when that happens. Which could be in an hour, or perhaps a week, but no longer.”

No doubt taking the boat and getting out of there while the getting was good, would be safer. If also an insult. He didn’t weigh that for too long though, just a couple of seconds, since it might also be considered an insult.

“That sounds good. The avoiding two to three weeks at sea option. Thank you, magi.”

She nodded, “I have to get to my duties. Your friends are in the next wing, any servant will be able to get you there. Good luck.”

He just nodded in respect, not wanting to repeat himself and thank her yet again. He wasn’t sure what to think of her, except possibly that he’d been masterfully played the last couple of days, as the beautiful elf turned and walked away.

He shook his head. He supposed that was better than dealing with someone unbalanced and touchy, but at least in that case he wouldn’t be feeling… confused. He honestly had
